Pops and bangs remap for petrol cars

A pops and bangs remap adds crackles and burbles from the exhaust when you lift off the throttle. We set it up at your home or workplace, as loud or as restrained as you want.

How a crackle map works

When you lift off the accelerator, a standard ECU cuts the fuel completely. A crackle map keeps a small amount of fuel going in and retards the ignition, so some of it burns in the exhaust instead of the cylinder.

That late combustion is what you hear as pops, bangs and burbles on the overrun. How much fuel, for how long and at which revs decides whether it sounds like a gentle rumble or a rally car.

Choose your volume

Every burble tuning job is set to your taste, and these are the three levels most people pick from.

Subtle burble

A soft rumble on the overrun that you'll mostly hear yourself. Easy to live with on the commute.

Noticeable crackle

Clear pops when you lift off at higher revs, without turning heads at every junction.

Full pops and bangs

Loud, frequent cracks for cars on sports exhausts. Best kept for owners who don't mind the attention.

Which cars a pops and bangs map works on

Hot hatches and turbo petrol saloons are the usual candidates, from a Fiesta ST or Golf GTI to petrol BMWs, Audis and Minis. Cars with a sports exhaust already fitted give the most noticeable result.

Some ECUs are harder to modify than others, so we check yours from the registration before quoting. Our vehicles page lists the makes we work on most.

Before you go loud

A crackle map is a lot of fun, but there are a few things worth knowing first.

  • It works best on turbocharged petrol cars, and diesels can't produce the same effect
  • A sports or aftermarket pops and bangs exhaust makes it much louder than a standard system
  • More aggressive settings put extra heat through the exhaust and catalytic converter
  • Police can act on vehicles they judge to be excessively noisy, so very loud maps carry some risk
  • It's a modification, so tell your insurer (see our insurance and warranty guide)

Add pops and bangs to a remap

Many people add a crackle map at the same time as a Stage 1 remap or a Stage 2 remap. Both are written in the same visit, so you get the extra performance and the sound together.

Pricing depends on the car and whether it's being remapped at the same time. Send us your registration and we'll quote you before booking.

Frequently asked questions about pops and bangs

SGR Automotive van parked outside a customer's house
How much does a pops and bangs tune cost?

We price it per car, as it depends on the ECU and whether it's added to a performance remap. Call 0161 694 7331 or send us your registration for a quote.

Will pops and bangs damage my car?

A sensible map puts limited extra heat through the exhaust. The louder and more frequent the pops, the more heat the catalytic converter and exhaust parts see, which is why we set it up with you rather than going to the maximum by default.

Can I have pops and bangs on a diesel?

No. Diesels don't have spark ignition, so they can't produce the same overrun crackle. This tune is for petrol cars.

Is a crackle map legal?

The map isn't illegal in itself, but your car still has to meet the rules on noise. A quieter setting is far less likely to draw attention than full pops and bangs.

Can you add a crackle map to another tuner's remap?

Sometimes. It depends on the ECU and how the existing map has been written. Send us the details and we'll tell you whether we can add to it or need to start again from your original file.

Can it be turned down or removed later?

Yes, the map can be toned down or the overrun setting returned to standard. Ask us for a price before you book.
