Speed limiter removal for vans and cars
Speed limiter removal raises or takes away a top speed cap set in your vehicle's software. We do it on site at your home, yard or depot, usually in a single visit.
Why vans and cars end up limited
Many vans come off fleet contracts with a cap set well below the 70mph motorway limit, sometimes as low as 56 or 62mph. Some manufacturers also fit a factory limit to certain models.
The cap usually lives in the engine software, which means it can be raised to a new figure or removed without any parts being changed.
When removing a limiter makes sense
These are the situations that bring most people to us.
- You've bought an ex-fleet van that's still capped below motorway speed
- Joining a motorway or passing a lorry feels unsafe with the limiter cutting in
- The van's been converted into a camper and no longer needs its fleet setting
- A new fleet policy means your vans need a different cap
Vehicles that must keep a limiter
Goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes gross weight, and most buses and coaches, must have a working speed limiter by law. This service is for cars and light vans where a limiter isn't a legal requirement.
If you're not sure which applies to your vehicle, check the plated weight on the chassis plate or send us the registration and we'll tell you.
How speed limiter removal works
Some fleets fit a separate aftermarket limiter unit rather than using the engine software. Mention it when you book, and we'll tell you whether we can help with that type.
Tell us the vehicle
Send the registration and the current limit, and we'll confirm the van or car qualifies and give you a price.
Software check
On the day, we read the ECU and any fault codes, and confirm where the limit is set.
New setting written
The original file is saved, then the limit is raised to your chosen speed or removed.
Checked and handed back
We confirm the change has taken and the vehicle is free of fault codes.
Combine it with a van remap
If the van is being mapped anyway, the limiter can be changed in the same visit. A van remap adds pulling power for loads and towing, and an eco remap is set up for mpg.
Ford Transit, Custom and Ranger owners on the SID212 ECU can have both done too, but that ECU is removed and unlocked off site, with a 7-day turnaround at £1,200 + VAT. See our Ford SID212 tuning guide.
What van owners say about us
How much does van speed limiter removal cost?
The price depends on the vehicle and whether it's done with a remap. Send us your registration or call 0161 694 7331, and we'll quote before you book.
Is it legal to remove a speed limiter on a van?
For most vans under 3.5 tonnes, a limiter isn't a legal requirement, so a fleet or factory cap can be raised or removed. Heavier goods vehicles must keep one fitted and working.
Can you set a different limit instead of removing it?
Yes. Plenty of fleet operators want a cap, just at a different speed, and we can set it to the figure you choose.
Will anything else change on the vehicle?
No. Only the top speed setting is changed, and power, fuelling and the rest of the map stay as they were, unless you also book a remap.
Does removing the limiter affect insurance or a lease?
Removing a limiter changes the vehicle's software, so your insurer should be told. On a leased or fleet van, get permission from the owner first, as many contracts need the original settings in place. Our insurance and warranty guide has more.
Can a speed limiter removal chip do the same job?
A chip or plug-in box works differently from a software change, and results vary from one to the next. On most modern vehicles the limit is stored in the ECU, so we change the setting there.
Get your speed limiter sorted
Send us the registration and the limit you want, and we'll price it and arrange a visit to your home, yard or depot. Most vans are back in use the same day.
