BMW 3 Series remapping

If you want your 3 Series to feel stronger when overtaking, or to stretch a tank further on the motorway, a remap can help with both. We map 320d, 330d, 335d and petrol 3 Series cars where they're parked, and every job starts with a fault check.

Reasons to remap a 3 Series

  • You cover long motorway runs and want the car to hold speed on inclines without dropping a gear
  • Overtaking on A roads feels hesitant and you'd like stronger mid-range pull
  • You tow a trailer or caravan with a 330d or 335d and want more torque low down
  • A high-mileage 320d is your daily car and an economy map could cut your fuel spend
  • Your 340i or 320i is standard and you'd like sharper throttle response

What a remap changes on a 3 Series

BMW sets the factory map with wide margins so the same software can run in any market. A remap rewrites settings such as boost pressure, fuel delivery and ignition timing for UK fuel and roads, so the engine pulls harder through the middle of the rev range.

On a diesel like the 320d, that extra torque often lets you hold a higher gear for longer. A petrol 3 Series tends to feel more eager when you press the throttle.

Work worth pairing with a 3 Series remap

Gearbox map

If your 3 Series has an automatic gearbox, a gearbox map for £195 + VAT matches the shift points to the new engine map. The engine and gearbox package is £440 + VAT.

Carbon cleaning first

A diesel 3 Series with heavy carbon build-up in the intake may benefit from a carbon clean for £125 + VAT before a Stage 1 map.

Diagnostics if there's a fault

A warning light or a stored fault should be sorted before mapping. Our diagnostics visit is £100 + VAT.

What we do about it

We read every stored code on your 3 Series before touching the software, then save the original file so it can be restored later. The new map goes in through the diagnostic port, and a Stage 1, Stage 2 or economy map costs £275 + VAT.

Once it's written, we read the codes again and go through the changes with you. Our Stage 1 remap page explains the most popular option in more detail.

Will I notice the difference in my 3 Series day to day?

Yes. A remapped 3 Series usually feels stronger pulling out of junctions and up slip roads, and you'll find yourself changing down less often on the motorway.

Can a remap improve my 3 Series' mpg?

It can, especially on a diesel. An economy map is set up for fuel use, and it suits a 320d used for high-mileage commuting. How much you save depends on how the car is used.

Should faults be fixed before the 3 Series is remapped?

Yes. Mapping over a fault can hide it or make it worse, so we read the codes first and tell you if anything needs attention before we go ahead.

Can a remap cause problems on a 3 Series?

A map written for a healthy engine and its parts shouldn't. Problems tend to come from mapping a car with an existing fault or worn parts, which is why we check first.

Send the registration and tell us how you use the car, and we'll recommend a map and confirm the price. The BMW remapping page covers the rest of the range.
