What we do about it
Our diagnostic check is £100 + VAT and confirms which part has failed. We don't clean EGR valves, so a Focus that needs a new valve has it fitted by a garage.
The EGR delete is £220 + VAT and switches the system off in the ECU.
A Focus that idles roughly, stutters when pulling away or drops into limp mode may have an EGR valve that's sticking. We read the codes and live data on your driveway or at work to find out. If you'd rather switch the EGR off, the delete is £220 + VAT.
Exhaust gas going back through the valve carries soot, which mixes with oil vapour and hardens on the valve and intake. Over time the valve can't open or close as it should, and the ECU logs a fault.
That's true whether your Focus is a 1.6 TDCi or a 1.8 TDCi. Lots of short trips speed the process up, because a cold engine produces more soot.

A lumpy idle, hesitation from low revs, black smoke and limp mode. You may notice them for a while before the warning light comes on.
P0400, P0401 and P0403 are among the most common, with P042E showing a valve stuck open. Live data tells us which part is really at fault.
Yes, when the ECU loses control of EGR flow it can cut power to protect the engine.
Lost coolant or white smoke points to the cooler, while rough running points to the valve. Our EGR cooler guide explains the difference, and diagnostics confirm it.
No. The delete is only for a Focus used off-road or going for export, as our EGR delete legality guide explains.
Tell us the Focus registration and how it's behaving, and we'll arrange a visit. Other Ford models are on our Ford EGR page, and DPF warnings on the same car are covered under Focus DPF problems.
