DPF warning light meaning and what to do next
The DPF warning light means soot is collecting in your diesel particulate filter faster than the engine can burn it off. A steady run at speed often lets the filter regenerate and puts the light out. If it stays on, flashes or brings other lights with it, the filter needs a clean or there's a fault to find.
What the DPF light looks like
On most cars and vans it's an amber symbol of a box with dots inside, sometimes with lines either side to show the exhaust. Some makes use words instead. Ford shows "Exhaust filter overloaded", and other brands display "Particulate filter full" or a similar message.
Amber means attention is needed soon. It isn't a stop-now warning on its own, but it shouldn't be ignored for weeks either.
What to do when the light first comes on
Check your handbook
Manufacturers give their own advice for clearing the light, and it varies from model to model.
Plan a steady run
Most handbooks suggest 10 to 20 minutes at 40mph or more, on a road where that's safe and legal, so the exhaust gets hot enough to regenerate.
Hold a lower gear if the handbook allows
Keeping the revs up around 2,000 to 2,500 helps the exhaust temperature stay high.
Don't switch off halfway
If the fan is running or the idle is high when you stop, a regeneration may still be going on.
See whether it clears
If the light goes out, the filter has done its job. If it's still on after one or two attempts, book a check rather than trying again and again.
When other lights come on with it
The DPF light rarely tells the whole story by itself. What's lit alongside it says a lot about how urgent the problem is.
| Dashboard shows | Likely meaning | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Steady DPF light | Soot is building and a regeneration is needed | Try a steady run as above |
| DPF light flashing (on some makes) | Soot is high and a regeneration is overdue or has failed | Book a check soon and avoid short trips |
| DPF light with the engine management light | The ECU has logged a fault, often with reduced power | Get the codes read |
| DPF light with a flashing glow plug light (common on VW group diesels) | An engine fault has been stored, often with limp mode | Get the codes read |
| Light comes on and goes off again | Regenerations are being interrupted, or a sensor is giving odd readings | Get the codes read |
Flashing patterns differ between manufacturers, so check the handbook for your model.
Why the DPF light keeps coming on
If the light returns every few weeks, something is stopping the filter clearing itself. These are the usual reasons we find.
- Mostly short journeys, so the exhaust never gets hot enough
- A faulty differential pressure sensor or split sensor pipe, often logged as P2453
- An EGR valve sticking open and sending extra soot down the exhaust (P0401 is common)
- Worn or leaking injectors
- A thermostat stuck open, which keeps the engine too cool to regenerate
- Low DPF additive fluid on Peugeot, Citroen and some Ford diesels that use it
- Engine oil that isn't the low-ash grade the manufacturer specifies
Can you keep going with the DPF light on?
For a short while, gently, yes. Ignore it for long and the soot load climbs until the ECU puts the engine into limp mode and refuses to regenerate, which is when the fix gets dearer.
The MOT looks at the engine management light, and a blocked DPF often turns that on too. On diesels first used from 1 July 2008, an engine management light showing a fault is a major MOT failure.
How do I clear the DPF light?
If soot is the only cause, a long steady run lets the filter regenerate and the light should go out by itself. If that doesn't work, the filter needs a clean and forced regeneration, and the codes need clearing with diagnostic software.
Why is my DPF light still on after a clean?
The fault codes or the ECU's stored soot values may not have been reset, or a sensor is still giving a false reading. Ash, which a clean can't remove, is the other common reason. See our DPF cleaning and replacement costs guide for what comes next.
What does a flashing DPF light mean?
On makes that use it, a flashing DPF light means the soot load has got high enough to need attention soon. Some cars also cut power at this stage, so it's worth booking a check rather than waiting.
Can the DPF be blocked with no warning light?
Yes. A failing pressure sensor can under-read the soot load, so the filter fills up without the light coming on. Power loss and higher fuel use are often the first clues.

We'll come out to you, read the soot and pressure figures and clean the filter on the spot if that's what it needs. A full DPF clean is £275 + VAT.
