Blocked DPF: symptoms and how to fix it

A blocked DPF usually announces itself with the DPF warning light, then a loss of power and finally limp mode. Soot has built up faster than the filter can burn it off. The fix depends on how far it's gone, from a long run on the motorway to a professional clean.

Blocked DPF symptoms to look out for

Symptoms tend to arrive in stages, so you may notice one or two long before the car slows down.

  • A DPF light, or a message such as "Exhaust filter overloaded" on Fords and "Particulate filter system fault" on other makes
  • Sluggish acceleration that gets worse over a few weeks
  • The engine idling higher than usual, or the fan whirring after you lock up
  • A strong, hot smell from the exhaust after short journeys
  • The fuel gauge dropping faster than it used to
  • Limp mode, where the engine holds back power and revs to protect itself
  • Codes such as P2463 (soot accumulation) or P2002 (filter not trapping soot as expected) on a scan

How blocked is your DPF?

The right fix depends on how full the filter is and what's filling it. This is a rough guide to the stages we see.

StageWhat you noticeUsual fix
Starting to load upDPF light on, car feels normalA steady run at speed to let it regenerate
Heavily loadedLight stays on after a run, power downProfessional clean and forced regeneration
OverloadedLimp mode, ECU refusing to regenerateCleaning solution first, then a controlled regeneration
Full of ash or damagedBlocks again soon after a clean, P242F storedA new filter, or a delete

What actually blocks a DPF

Two things fill a filter. Soot comes from combustion and burns off during regeneration. Ash comes from additives in engine oil and fuel, and it stays in the filter for good, slowly taking up space over many thousands of miles.

Faults speed things up. A sticking EGR valve, leaking injectors, a turbo burning oil or a boost leak all mean more soot reaches the filter. A smoke test finds boost leaks, and a diagnostic check picks up most of the rest.

What to try first and what comes next

Steps 2 and 4 can usually happen on one visit from us.

A steady run, if the car isn't in limp mode

Twenty minutes or so at a constant motorway speed gives the filter a chance to regenerate by itself.

Get the codes and readings checked

If the light hasn't cleared, a scan shows the soot load, pressure readings and any fault that's causing the blockage.

Deal with the cause

A faulty pressure sensor, EGR valve or injector will block a cleaned filter again within weeks.

Clean the filter

A cleaning solution followed by a forced regeneration clears soot with the DPF still on the vehicle.

Replace it if the readings show ash or damage

Cleaning won't recover a filter that's full of ash or has cracked.

Why some DPFs keep blocking

If yours has blocked more than once in a year, look first at how the vehicle is used. Short trips and town traffic rarely let the filter clear, which is why delivery vans and school-run cars come up so often.

If the use hasn't changed, a fault is likely. Low-ash oil to the manufacturer's spec and fixing EGR or injector faults promptly go a long way to stopping it happening again.

Frequently asked questions about blocked DPFs

What does exhaust filter overloaded mean?

It's the message Ford uses when the DPF has too much soot in it. The handbook usually advises a steady run to let it regenerate. If the message stays, the filter needs a clean.

Can you clear a blocked DPF on the motorway?

If it's only partly loaded, often yes. A long run at a steady speed raises the exhaust temperature enough to regenerate. Once the vehicle is in limp mode or the ECU has stopped regenerating, a motorway run won't clear it.

Can a blocked DPF damage the turbo?

A badly blocked filter raises exhaust back pressure, which puts the turbo under extra strain over time. It's one reason not to leave a blocked DPF for weeks.

How much does it cost to unblock a DPF?

A mobile clean from SGR costs £275 + VAT, with the filter left on the vehicle. Our DPF cleaning and replacement costs guide compares that with a new filter.

Can a blocked DPF cause limp mode?

Yes. Once soot reaches a level the ECU won't risk burning off, it cuts power to protect the engine and the filter. See our guide to limp mode for other causes.

Is a DPF delete an option if the filter can't be saved?

Only for vehicles used off-road or for export. A road vehicle needs a working filter, and our guide Is DPF removal legal? explains why.

Have your blocked DPF cleaned on site

Tell us what the dash is showing and we'll come out with the cleaning kit and diagnostic software. A full clean costs £275 + VAT and keeps your original filter on the vehicle.
