P0544 exhaust gas temperature sensor circuit (bank 1 sensor 1)

P0544 keeps coming back because the ECU checks this sensor every time the engine runs, and a heat-damaged wire or failed sensor is still there after a reset. We test it at your home, yard or depot and tell you what needs replacing.

Why P0544 comes back after clearing

The official wording is Exhaust gas temperature sensor circuit (bank 1, sensor 1). Sensor 1 is the first temperature sensor in the exhaust, and the ECU uses it to manage the turbo and DPF regenerations.

Clearing the code doesn't repair the sensor or its wiring. As soon as the ECU sees the signal drop out or go implausible again, P0544 is stored, and many vehicles also stop regenerating the DPF until it's fixed.

The usual causes behind P0544

CauseHow it's checked
Failed temperature sensorLive temperature reading compared with the engine's other sensors
Wiring cooked or chafed near the exhaustVisual check and continuity tests
Corroded or loose connectorConnector inspection and a wiggle test with live data
Sensor damaged during other exhaust workService history and a visual check

Symptoms

  • The engine light returning soon after clearing
  • DPF regenerations stopping, then a DPF light as soot builds
  • Limp mode on some engines, to protect the turbo
  • A reading on a code reader that's stuck or wildly out compared with other sensors

Using the vehicle with P0544 showing

Short-term use is usually fine, but a vehicle that can't regenerate its DPF will fill it with soot. Leave it long enough and a cheap sensor fault turns into a blocked filter, so get it booked in rather than clearing it again.

Vans and fleets with P0544

Exhaust temperature sensors on vans live in a harsh spot, and their wiring often suffers first. We check vans at your yard or depot, so the sensor is tested without anyone losing a day to a garage visit.

Regular work across a fleet is best handled through a trade account, set up via our trade and partners page.

How we stop P0544 coming back

Sensor circuit test, £100 + VAT

We read the codes, compare the sensor's temperature reading with the others and test the wiring. You'll know if it's the sensor or the loom, ready for your garage to fit.

DPF cleaning after missed regenerations, £275 + VAT

If regenerations have been blocked for a while, readings show the soot load. Once the sensor is fixed we can clean the filter and run a forced regeneration on site.

Remap great loads better turbo lag has gone now

Frequently asked questions

SGR Automotive van parked outside a customer's house
Why does P0544 come back after it's been cleared?

The ECU monitors the sensor all the time. A faulty sensor or broken wire gives the same bad signal on the next start, and the code is stored again.

Can a remap cause P0544?

No. A remap doesn't change the sensor circuit. A well set-up remap respects exhaust temperature limits, while P0544 is about the sensor's signal itself.

Can another fault set off P0544?

A wiring loom shared with other exhaust sensors can set several codes at once. If P0546 is stored too, the signal is reading high.

Can you check P0544 on our vans at the depot?

Yes. We'll test each affected van where it's parked and give you a clear list of what needs replacing.

What should I tell you when I book for P0544?

The registration, the full code, whether the DPF light is on too and any recent exhaust or turbo work.

Stop P0544 coming back

Book a fault check and we'll test the exhaust temperature sensor at home, at work or at the depot.
