What to do about a P2454 fault code

With P2454 stored, the engine computer can't see how full the DPF is, so soot can build unchecked. The code means the DPF pressure sensor's signal is reading below its normal range, and we can test the sensor and wiring where the vehicle is parked.

Can you keep using it with P2454?

Fine for now

If there's no DPF light and the car pulls as usual, a few days of normal use while you book is generally fine.

Get it booked this week

The longer the ECU can't measure the filter, the more likely soot is to build. Book a check within the week, sooner if you mostly do short trips.

Stop and call us

Call if the vehicle goes into limp mode or a DPF light joins the engine light, as the filter may now be loading up.

Signs that go with P2454

  • The engine light on, usually with nothing else to notice
  • Regenerations seeming to stop
  • A DPF light following a while later
  • The fault showing up straight after exhaust or engine bay work

What P2454 means

The official definition is DPF pressure sensor A circuit low. The sensor's signal voltage has dropped below the lowest figure the ECU accepts, which almost always points to an electrical fault such as a short to earth, a lost supply or a sensor that has died.

Common causes

A short to earth in the wiring

A wire rubbing through against the body or exhaust can drag the signal down to zero.

A lost 5-volt supply

If the sensor's supply feed fails, the signal falls with it, and other sensors on the same feed may set codes too.

An unplugged or failed sensor

A plug left off after other work, or a sensor that has failed internally, gives the same low reading.

What to do right now

  • Look for other warnings. A DPF light or several sensor codes at once tell us a lot.
  • Think about recent work. If the exhaust or turbo has just been worked on, mention it.
  • Avoid lots of short trips until it's checked, as these load the filter fastest.
  • Leave the code stored so the freeze-frame data is still there when we read it.
  • Book a check with the registration and the full code.

How we sort P2454 where the vehicle is parked

We read the codes, then test the sensor's supply, earth and signal with the engine running. That shows whether it's wiring, the plug or the sensor, for £100 + VAT, and a garage fits any part needed using our findings.

If soot has built up while the sensor was down, readings show it and we can carry out DPF cleaning (£275 + VAT) on site. If the vehicle can't be moved, let us know when you book.

Frequently asked questions

SGR Automotive van parked outside a customer's house
Will P2454 put the car into limp mode?

Some vehicles do, to protect a filter they can no longer measure. Others keep going with just the warning light on.

How long can I leave P2454 before it gets worse?

Days rather than weeks, particularly with short trips. The risk is soot building without the regenerations that would normally clear it.

Can P2454 damage the DPF?

The code can't, but the soot that builds while the sensor is out of action can block the filter and make a regeneration run dangerously hot.

Will my car pass its MOT with P2454 showing?

No. The engine management light is an MOT fail, so the fault needs fixing before the test.

Is P2454 something I can fix myself?

Checking the sensor plug is pushed home is fine. Finding a short or a lost supply needs a meter and live data. Its opposite code is P2455, and the general circuit code is P2452.
