Audi A3 / S3 / RS3 EGR problems and delete

A lumpy idle, hesitation or limp mode on a diesel A3 can all come from a sticking EGR valve. We read the codes and live data at your home or work to confirm it. If you'd rather switch the valve off, the EGR delete is £220 + VAT.

EGR symptoms on an A3

  • Rough or uneven idle once the engine is warm
  • A hesitation or flat spot when you pull away
  • Black smoke under acceleration
  • Limp mode, usually with an engine management warning
  • The coolant level dropping or white smoke, both worth checking against the EGR cooler

What's behind EGR trouble on an A3

The EGR valve feeds a little exhaust gas back into the intake to cut emissions. That gas carries soot, and when it meets oil vapour from the engine breather it forms a hard deposit that gradually jams the valve.

A 2.0 TDI A3 that spends its life on short trips builds that deposit faster, because the engine rarely gets hot enough to keep things clean. Our EGR valve problems guide goes through the symptoms in more detail.

Fault codes you might see on an A3

CodeWhat it points to
P0401EGR flow lower than expected
P0403A fault in the valve's control circuit
P0400A general EGR flow problem

A circuit code can be wiring rather than the valve, so we confirm with live data before anything else.

What we do about it

Diagnostics cost £100 + VAT and pin down whether the valve, a sensor or the wiring is at fault. We don't clean EGR valves, so a replacement valve is a garage job.

We can also delete the EGR on an A3 for £220 + VAT, switching it off in the ECU and clearing the codes.

What are the signs of EGR trouble on an A3?

A rough idle, hesitation when pulling away, black smoke and limp mode are the usual signs. The engine management light often comes on with them.

Which fault codes point to the A3's EGR?

P0400, P0401 and P0403 are three of the commonest. A code shows where to look, and the live data confirms whether the valve has actually stuck.

Can a sticking EGR cause limp mode on an A3?

Yes. When the ECU can't control EGR flow properly, it can cut power to protect the engine until the fault is dealt with.

Is it the A3's EGR valve or the EGR cooler?

Coolant disappearing or white smoke points more towards the cooler, while a lumpy idle and black smoke point towards the valve. Diagnostics separate the two, and our EGR cooler guide explains the cooler side.

Can a deleted A3 still be driven on the road?

No. We sell the A3 EGR delete for off-road and export use only, and our guide on whether an EGR delete is legal sets out the rules for road cars.

Sort the EGR problem on your A3

Send the registration and describe what the car is doing, and we'll book a visit to your home or work. Other models are on our Audi EGR page, and DPF warnings on the same car are covered under A3 DPF problems.
