What a remap changes on the Focus

Ford leaves headroom in the standard software so one map works for every market. Remapping adjusts boost, fuelling and timing within safe limits, which on a Focus normally shows up as stronger acceleration from low revs and less need to change down on hills.

On the 1.0 EcoBoost the gain is mostly felt in everyday response. On a Focus ST, mk2 or mk3, petrol or diesel, the aim is usually a sharper car on faster roads.

Is it worth it on a Focus?

If your Focus has a turbo petrol or turbo diesel engine, it will give the best return on a remap. A Focus with a small non-turbo petrol engine gains very little, and we'll say so before you spend anything.

Stage 2 only makes sense once the hardware is in place. For an ST on standard parts, Stage 1 is the right starting point.

Insurance and warranty

Your insurer needs to know about a remap, since it counts as a modification to the car. A Focus still under Ford warranty could have engine or gearbox claims refused after mapping, so read the terms first. We cover both points in our guide to remaps, insurance and warranty.

Is Stage 2 an option on the Focus?

On a Focus ST with the right supporting parts, yes. Tell us what's been fitted when you book and we'll write the map around that list. Our Stage 2 remap page explains what Stage 2 involves.

Is the engine and gearbox package worth it on a Focus?

For an automatic Focus, the package costs £440 + VAT against £470 + VAT for the two maps booked separately. The gearbox map also keeps the shifts in step with the extra torque.

Do I need to tell my insurer about a remapped Focus?

Yes, a remap is a modification and should go on your policy. Leaving it off risks a claim being turned down.

Will a remap affect my Focus's warranty?

It may, since Ford can decline engine or driveline claims on a car with modified software. Check your cover with the dealer if the Focus is still under warranty.
