Land Rover Freelander EGR problems and delete
A Freelander that idles roughly, hesitates or drops into limp mode may have a sticking EGR valve. We read the codes and live data where it's parked and confirm what's wrong. The EGR delete is £220 + VAT.
EGR symptoms on a Freelander
- An uneven idle, sometimes with a shudder
- Hesitation when you accelerate from low revs
- Black smoke on hard acceleration
- Limp mode, often with the engine management light
- Coolant going missing or white smoke, signs the EGR cooler should be checked
What causes EGR problems on a Freelander
Exhaust gas fed back through the EGR valve carries soot, and oil vapour from the engine breather turns it into a sticky deposit. Over time the valve can't open or close properly, and the ECU logs a fault.
That applies whether you have a Freelander 1, a Freelander 2 or a TD4. Our EGR valve symptoms guide covers the warning signs in more depth.
What we do about it
Our diagnostic check costs £100 + VAT and tells you whether the valve, the cooler, a sensor or the wiring is the cause. We don't clean EGR valves, so a repair means a new valve or cooler fitted by a garage.
The delete is £220 + VAT and switches the EGR off in the ECU.
What are the signs of EGR trouble on a Freelander?
A rough idle, hesitation, black smoke and limp mode are the usual ones, often with an engine management light alongside.
Which fault codes point to the Freelander's EGR?
P0401, P042E and P0403 are three common examples, and P0400 is another. We read the live data to confirm which part is at fault.
Can a sticking EGR put a Freelander into limp mode?
It can. If the ECU loses control of EGR flow, it may reduce power to protect the engine until the fault is cleared.
Is it the Freelander's EGR valve or the cooler?
White smoke and falling coolant suggest the cooler, while lumpy running and black smoke suggest the valve. Our EGR cooler failure guide explains the cooler side, and diagnostics tell the two apart.
Is a Freelander EGR delete road legal?
No. It's sold for off-road and export use only, so a Freelander driven on UK roads keeps its EGR. Our guide on whether an EGR delete is legal explains why.
Sort the EGR problem on your Freelander
Send the registration and the symptoms, and we'll arrange a visit to your home or work. Other models are on our Land Rover EGR page, and Freelander remapping can be booked as well.
