Renault Trafic DPF problems and cleaning

Cleaning the DPF on a Trafic costs £275 + VAT and is done with the filter still on the van. Replacing the filter is often £1,000 or more; a delete is £220 + VAT. Send the registration and we'll quote before we visit.

If the cause of the blockage isn't clear, a diagnostic check costs £100 + VAT and tells you which option makes sense.

What DPF cleaning changes on the Trafic

A blocked filter holds back exhaust flow, so the van feels flat and the ECU may cut power to protect the engine. Cleaning breaks down the hardened soot with a solution, then a forced regeneration burns it out at high temperature.

Once the soot has gone, the pressure readings across the filter drop back and the warning clears. The Trafic should then pull normally and regenerate by itself on longer runs.

Is it worth it on a Trafic?

For most Trafics, cleaning is the sensible first step, because it costs a fraction of a new filter and fixes most soot blockages. We check the readings before starting, so you won't pay for a clean that can't work.

Ash is the exception. It builds up over the filter's life and doesn't burn, so a filter that's full of ash, or one that's cracked, needs replacing by a garage.

Frequently asked questions

Is cleaning cheaper than a new DPF on a Trafic?

By a long way. A clean is £275 + VAT at your yard or home, while a new filter is often over £1,000 once it's fitted, depending on the van.

What if the Trafic's DPF is full of ash?

Then cleaning won't bring it back, because ash can't be burnt off. Our readings show this before any work starts, and if the filter needs replacing we'll tell you rather than clean it anyway.

Is a Trafic DPF delete legal?

Only for vans that are used off-road or going abroad for export. On a Trafic used on UK roads, a delete breaks the law on emissions and is an MOT failure. Our guide on whether DPF removal is legal goes into the detail.

Can a fuel additive fix my Trafic's DPF?

An additive won't shift soot that has already packed hard into the filter, and it does nothing for ash. Once the warning is on, a proper clean and regeneration is the more reliable fix.
