Audi A6 / RS6 DPF problems and cleaning

A "particulate filter system fault" message or a DPF light on an A6 usually means soot is building up faster than the car can burn it off. We check the codes at your home or work and clean the filter there for £275 + VAT.

DPF warning signs on an A6

  • "Particulate filter system fault" on the driver's display
  • An amber DPF warning light
  • Hesitation and less power when overtaking
  • Limp mode after a run of short trips
  • A raised idle or cooling fan running after you park, signs of a regeneration trying to finish

What's behind a blocked A6 filter

A large diesel saloon or Avant that mostly does short trips rarely gets its exhaust hot enough for long enough to finish a regeneration. Soot builds with each failed attempt until the ECU puts the warning up.

A faulty pressure sensor, a sticking EGR valve or a worn injector can also be to blame, either by adding soot or by stopping regenerations from starting.

Fault codes you might see on an A6

CodeWhat it points to
P2463The filter is carrying too much soot
P2002Trapping performance below the ECU's threshold
P246CRestriction severe enough to bring in a power limit

We check these against the live pressure and soot data, so a sensor fault isn't mistaken for a full filter.

What we do about it

A diagnostic check costs £100 + VAT and confirms the cause. If the filter is loaded with soot, we clean it in place for £275 + VAT with a cleaning solution and a forced regeneration.

If the filter is beyond cleaning, a DPF delete is £220 + VAT. If yours is a petrol RS6 showing a filter warning, see our petrol particulate filter cleaning page.

Why does my A6's DPF keep blocking?

Usually because it isn't getting the long runs it needs to regenerate. If it blocks soon after being cleared, we'd look at the EGR valve, injectors and pressure sensor next.

What does the DPF warning mean on an A6?

The ECU believes the filter is close to full of soot. It's a prompt to get it seen before the car goes into limp mode.

Can I keep using my A6 with the DPF light on?

A long, steady run might help if the light has only just appeared. If the light stays on or the car loses power, book a check rather than carrying on with short trips.

Will a forced regeneration clear the A6's filter?

Sometimes, on a filter that isn't badly loaded. Heavily packed soot often stops a regeneration completing, so we soften it with a cleaning solution first.

Can I have the DPF deleted on an A6 I use on the road?

No. An A6 DPF delete is only for cars kept off-road or going for export, and our guide to DPF removal and the law explains why.
