P0380 fault code meaning and fix

P0380 means the engine computer has found a fault in the glow plug heating circuit on a diesel. A failed plug, a damaged wire or a faulty glow plug controller is the usual cause, and we can test the circuit wherever the vehicle is parked.

The short answer

The official description is Glow plug/heater circuit A. Glow plugs heat the combustion chambers so a cold diesel fires easily, and the ECU has spotted a current or resistance reading in that circuit that doesn't match a healthy system.

A warm engine usually runs normally with P0380 stored. The trouble comes on cold mornings, when starting gets harder and a flat battery from long cranking becomes a real risk.

Symptoms that go with P0380

  • Long cranking before the engine catches, worst on cold mornings
  • Rough, misfiring running for the first minute or two after a cold start
  • White smoke from the exhaust until the engine warms up
  • The glow plug light flashing or staying on after starting on some makes
  • A knocking sound from cold that fades once the engine is warm

What causes P0380

CauseWhat you might noticeHow it's confirmed
One or more failed glow plugsHard cold starts, misfire until warmResistance and current test on each plug
Damaged wiring or a loose plug connectorFault comes and goes, sometimes over bumpsCircuit checks with the loom moved
Faulty glow plug control module or relayAll plugs inactive, often with P0670Module output test
Blown fuse in the glow circuitNo glow at all from the moment it setFuse and supply check

Reading P0380 properly

P0380 is generic, so it describes the same circuit on any diesel. It doesn't say which plug has failed, which is why many vehicles store extra cylinder-specific codes or a manufacturer code alongside it with more detail.

A plug can test fine when cold and fail once heated, so a single resistance check isn't always enough. Current draw with the system switched on gives a better picture of which plug or wire is letting the circuit down.

How P0380 gets fixed

  • Read the codes and freeze-frame data, including any cylinder-specific glow plug codes stored with P0380.
  • Test the circuit. Each plug, the wiring and the control module are checked, so the fault is pinned to one part.
  • Replace the faulty part. A garage fits the plug, module or wiring repair, and we tell you exactly which is needed.
  • Clear and recheck once the repair is done, so the glow system is confirmed working before the next cold start.

What we can do about P0380

Mobile diagnostics, £100 + VAT

We read the codes and test the glow plug circuit where the car or van is parked, then explain the result in plain English. You get a precise answer for the garage, so you're not paying for a full set of plugs when one has failed.

Repair through your garage

Glow plugs can seize in the cylinder head on some engines, so removal is a job for a garage with the right tools. Our diagnosis tells them which plug or part to go after.

What does P0380 mean in plain English?

Something in the system that pre-heats the engine for starting isn't working properly, so cold starts will be harder until it's fixed.

Is P0380 a serious fault?

It won't usually cause damage straight away. Hard starting puts strain on the battery and starter, though, and a plug that breaks up inside the engine is a much bigger repair.

Can I clear P0380 with a cheap code reader?

You can turn the light off, but the ECU tests the glow circuit every time you start from cold, so the code soon returns if the fault is still there.

Does P0380 mean the same thing on every make?

The code itself does. How the glow system is wired varies, and some makes add their own codes that name the cylinder, which helps narrow it down.
