P0490 fault code meaning and fix

P0490 means the voltage in the EGR valve's control circuit is higher than it should be. A broken wire, a corroded plug or a valve with a failed motor is the usual cause, and we can trace it at your home or workplace.

The short answer

The official description is EGR control circuit high. When the ECU switches the EGR valve, it expects the voltage on that wire to change in a set way. A reading stuck high usually means the circuit is open, so the valve isn't being operated at all.

The vehicle normally keeps going, often with the EGR valve shut, so you may notice little. It still needs fixing, as the lit light fails an MOT and some engines cut power with it.

Symptoms that go with P0490

  • The engine management light with the car feeling largely normal
  • A slight change in engine note or a harsher knock at light throttle
  • Limp mode on some makes
  • The fault appearing after wet weather or over bumpy roads

What causes P0490

CauseWhat you might noticeHow it's confirmed
Broken or disconnected control wireConstant fault from the moment it setContinuity test on the circuit
Corroded or loose connector at the valveFault that comes and goesConnector inspection and a wiggle test
Failed valve motor or solenoid (open winding)Valve doesn't respond to commandsResistance check and actuation test

Reading P0490 properly

P0490 is generic and describes the same circuit fault on any make. It's the high-voltage partner of P0489, which is the low side, and both are more specific versions of the general circuit code P0403.

Because it's electrical, a meter and a wiring diagram find it faster than swapping parts. A valve that's mechanically clogged with carbon usually sets a flow code such as P0401 instead.

How P0490 gets fixed

  • Read the codes and check whether the fault is constant or comes and goes.
  • Test the circuit from the ECU to the valve, including the plug and the valve's own winding.
  • Repair the wire or connector, or have a garage fit a new valve.
  • Clear and recheck with the valve commanded on live data.

What we can do about P0490

Mobile diagnostics, £100 + VAT

We test the EGR control circuit and the valve where the vehicle is parked, so you know whether it's a wire, a plug or the valve itself.

EGR delete, £220 + VAT

A software delete stops the ECU operating and monitoring the valve, which ends the fault for good.

What does P0490 mean in plain English?

The electrical signal that controls the EGR valve isn't behaving, usually because a wire or plug has lost its connection.

Is P0490 a serious fault?

It isn't usually urgent, but it won't fix itself and it means an MOT fail while the light is on.

Can I clear P0490 with a cheap code reader?

You can clear it, though it returns as soon as the ECU tries to work the valve again.

How much does it cost to find the cause of P0490?

A mobile diagnostic is £100 + VAT. Many P0490 faults turn out to be wiring, which costs much less than a valve.

Who is the EGR delete for after a P0490 fault?

It's for vehicles used off-road or heading for export, not cars and vans on UK roads. Our guide Is EGR delete legal? covers the rules.
