P2201 fault code meaning and fix

P2201 means a NOx sensor on bank 1 is giving readings outside the range the engine computer expects. An ageing sensor, a wiring fault or an exhaust leak is the usual cause, and we can test it where the vehicle is parked.

The short answer

The official description is NOx sensor circuit range/performance (bank 1). The sensor is working electrically, but its readings don't match what the ECU expects for the way the engine is running, or they respond too slowly.

The vehicle usually feels normal. On many Euro 6 vehicles, though, an untrusted NOx sensor starts the no-restart countdown, so don't put it off.

Symptoms that go with P2201

  • The engine light, often with an emissions or AdBlue warning
  • A countdown appearing on the dash
  • No change in power or economy in most cases

What causes P2201

CauseWhat you might noticeHow it's confirmed
Ageing or contaminated NOx sensorSlow or flat readingsLive readings compared with the engine's state
Exhaust leak near the sensorBlowing sound or soot marksVisual check and warm-engine readings
Damaged loom or a damp plugFault that appears after wet weatherWiring inspection and resistance tests

Reading P2201 properly

P2201 is generic and normally refers to the upstream NOx sensor, ahead of the AdBlue catalyst. The downstream sensor has its own code, P229F, so the code tells you which sensor to look at.

Because it's a performance code, the sensor can pass a basic electrical check and still be faulty. Its readings need comparing on a fully warm engine to be sure.

How P2201 gets fixed

  • Read the codes and AdBlue status, including any countdown.
  • Compare the sensor's readings with the engine fully warm, and check for exhaust leaks.
  • Repair or replace. A dealer or SCR specialist replaces the sensor or fixes the wiring.
  • Clear and verify that the readings now behave normally.

What we can do about P2201

Mobile diagnostics, £100 + VAT

We read the NOx sensors and SCR data on site and confirm whether the sensor, wiring or a leak is to blame. NOx sensor replacement isn't something we do, so you'll have a clear diagnosis for your dealer.

AdBlue delete, £330 + VAT

A software delete takes the SCR monitoring out of the ECU.

Frequently asked questions

What does P2201 mean in plain English?

A NOx sensor is giving numbers the car doesn't believe, so it can't properly check the AdBlue system.

Is P2201 a serious fault?

Not for the engine, but the countdown it can trigger makes it one to deal with quickly.

Can I clear P2201 with a cheap code reader?

The code returns as soon as the sensor's readings are checked again, often within the same journey.

How much does it cost to find the cause of P2201?

A mobile diagnostic is £100 + VAT. Related NOx circuit codes are P2200 and P2202.

Is the AdBlue delete legal for a P2201 fault?

Only on a vehicle used off-road or going for export, which is the only way we sell it. Is AdBlue delete legal? covers the law.
