P242F diesel particulate filter restriction from ash accumulation

P242F keeps returning because ash can't be burnt out of a DPF the way soot can, so no regeneration or code reset will move it. We check the filter readings at your home, yard or depot and tell you which fix actually stops the code.

Why P242F comes back after clearing

Soot is carbon and burns away during a regeneration. Ash is what's left over from engine oil and fuel additives, and it doesn't burn at any temperature the exhaust reaches, so it stays packed into the filter channels for good.

Clearing P242F, officially DPF restriction, ash accumulation, only wipes the record. The ECU checks the pressure across the filter, or its own ash estimate, the next time conditions allow, finds the same restriction and logs the code again. Repeated forced regenerations won't help and add heat stress to the filter.

The usual causes behind P242F

CauseHow it's checked
Normal ash build-up on a high-mileage filterPressure readings with a low soot figure, plus the ECU's ash estimate
Engine burning oil, which adds ash fasterOil level history, blue smoke, turbo and breather checks
Oil that isn't the low-ash grade the engine needsService history and the oil spec for the vehicle
Additive residue on DPFs fed by an additive fluid, fitted to some Peugeot and Citroen modelsAdditive system readings and fault codes
A pressure sensor or pipe reading highSensor figures compared with what the filter should show, plus codes like P2453

Symptoms

  • The DPF or engine light back on within days of being cleared
  • Forced regenerations finishing without the warning going out
  • Power held back or limp mode as the restriction grows
  • The fan running after switch-off more often than it used to
  • Fuel use creeping up as the engine pushes against back pressure

Using the vehicle with P242F showing

Most vehicles keep going for a while, though many reduce power as the ash load climbs. It won't get better with use, and every regeneration attempt against a choked filter adds heat. Plan the repair now instead of waiting for limp mode on a busy day.

Vans and fleets with P242F

High-mileage vans are where P242F turns up most often, because ash builds up over the whole life of the filter. We check vans at your yard or depot between jobs, so you find out which ones need a new filter without taking them off the road first.

For regular checks across several vans, a trade account keeps things straightforward. See our trade and partners page.

How we stop P242F coming back

Filter readings and diagnosis, £100 + VAT

We read the codes, soot figure, ash estimate and DPF pressure to confirm whether ash is really the problem or a sensor is misreporting. Cleaning won't remove ash, so we won't sell you a clean that can't work.

New filter

A replacement DPF comes from a garage or dealer. That's often over £1,000 fitted, depending on the vehicle, and it resets the ash count from zero.

DPF delete, £220 + VAT

A software delete stops the ECU monitoring the filter, so the ash load no longer sets the code.

Remap great loads better turbo lag has gone now

Frequently asked questions

SGR Automotive van parked outside a customer's house
Why does P242F come back after it's been cleared?

Ash stays in the filter whatever you clear or regenerate, so the next pressure check finds the same blockage and the code is stored again.

Can a remap cause P242F?

A poor map that makes extra smoke adds soot, not ash, so it's an unlikely cause on its own. A properly set-up remap stays within safe limits and doesn't change how quickly ash builds up.

Can another fault set off P242F?

Yes. An engine using oil adds ash quickly, and a faulty pressure sensor can report a restriction that isn't there. That's why the readings come before any talk of a new filter.

Can you check P242F on our vans at the depot?

We can. Let us know how many vans are showing it and where they're parked, and we'll read each one on site and tell you which need a filter.

What should I tell you when I book for P242F?

The registration, the full code, the mileage and whether the DPF has been cleaned or replaced before. If you're running a Peugeot or Citroen with additive fluid, say when it was last topped up.

Can I use the DPF delete on a road vehicle with P242F?

No. The delete is for off-road and export vehicles only, so a car or van on UK roads needs a new filter. Our guide Is DPF removal legal? explains the rules.

Stop P242F coming back

Book a fault check and we'll confirm whether ash is behind it before you pay for a filter, wherever the vehicle is parked.
