Where an EGR delete fits in
Our EGR delete switches EGR control and monitoring off in the ECU for £220 + VAT, at your home, yard or workplace. Once it's done, EGR faults stop being logged, so there's no new valve to carbon up again.
EGR valve replacement cost depends on the part and how much of the engine has to come apart to reach it, so bills vary a lot between vehicles. We don't replace valves at SGR, but this guide explains what makes up the price and how it compares with our £220 + VAT EGR delete.
A garage quote for a new EGR valve is usually made up of several parts, and it helps to know which ones apply to your vehicle.
A genuine part costs more than a pattern one. On some engines the valve comes as a module with the cooler or pipework, which raises the price.
Some valves sit on top of the engine and swap in under an hour. Others hide behind the intake pipework or turbo, and the labour can be several times the cost of the part.
New gaskets are needed every time the valve comes off, and some garages replace bolts or pipes at the same time.
On many modern diesels the ECU has to learn the new valve's positions, using diagnostic software, before it works properly.
A good garage confirms the valve is faulty before fitting a new one. If not, you risk paying for a part that doesn't fix the problem.
An EGR fault code doesn't always mean the valve is finished. It's worth ruling these out, because some cost far less to fix.
| New valve at a garage | Valve cleaned at a garage | SGR EGR delete | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Part, labour and coding, depending on the vehicle | Usually less than a new valve | £220 + VAT |
| Where | At the garage | At the garage | At your home or workplace |
| Lasting fix? | A new valve can carbon up again in time | Depends on the valve's condition | EGR faults stop being logged |
| Done by SGR? | No | No | Yes |
Fitting a new valve into a heavily carboned intake, or leaving the original cause unfixed, means the replacement starts clogging straight away. Short trips, a worn crankcase breather and injector faults all add to the soot and oil vapour that coat the valve.
If carbon in the intake is part of the problem, our carbon cleaning (£125 + VAT) clears deposits from the engine's airways, and can be booked alongside a valve fitted by your garage.

It varies with the vehicle, the part and the labour time. Ask your garage for a quote that lists each one separately, and get the fault confirmed first so you're not paying for a valve you don't need.
On many vehicles, yes. Ours costs £220 + VAT wherever the vehicle is parked in our North West area, but it's for off-road and export use only, so it can't replace a repair on a road vehicle. Read is EGR delete legal? for the details.
On some engines the position or pressure sensor is a separate part and can be swapped on its own. On many others it's built into the valve, so the whole valve has to be replaced.
With a confirmed valve fault, yes, as it keeps the engine running properly and passing its MOT. Fix whatever made the old one clog, or the new one may go the same way.
No. We diagnose EGR faults on site and carry out EGR deletes, and we can tell your garage exactly what needs replacing.
Before you pay for a new valve, let us confirm what's actually wrong. We'll come to you, read the codes and live data and give you a clear answer for £100 + VAT.
