Is remapping worth it? Weighing up the pros, cons and safety
For most turbo diesel and turbo petrol engines, remapping is worth it if you want stronger pulling, easier overtaking or a van that copes better with a load. It's harder to justify on a small non-turbo engine, a car still under manufacturer warranty, or if your insurer would charge a lot more. Here's how to weigh it up for your own vehicle.
The benefits of remapping
More torque where you use it
The engine pulls harder in the mid-range, so you change down less on hills and motorway slip roads.
Easier overtaking
Extra power cuts the time you spend on the wrong side of the road.
Better towing and load carrying
Vans and pick-ups hold their speed with a trailer or a full load in the back.
Possible fuel savings
Diesels often return slightly better mpg after a remap, and an economy remap is set up with that as the aim.
Smoother gearbox behaviour
A gearbox remap can sharpen shifts on DSG and automatic cars.
The downsides to weigh up
A remap counts as a modification, so you'll need to tell your insurer, and the premium may rise. A manufacturer can also refuse a warranty claim on parts it believes the remap has affected.
Extra torque puts more load on the clutch, dual-mass flywheel and turbo. A sensible map stays inside their limits, but a component that's already worn will show it sooner.
Is remapping safe?
Remapping is safe when the map is written for your engine and stays within what the turbo, injectors, gearbox and clutch can handle. Manufacturers leave headroom to cover poor fuel, extreme climates and missed services, and a good remap uses only part of that margin.
Trouble tends to come from maps pushed too hard, or from engines with a fault already present. That's why a fault check before mapping matters, and why we save your original file first.
Who gets the most from a remap
Van owners
Torque is what moves a loaded van, and a van remap makes towing and hill starts far less of a struggle.
High-mileage commuters
On a diesel covering long distances, an economy map can trim fuel costs over a year.
Hot hatch and performance car owners
Turbo petrol engines respond well, with a Stage 1 remap on a standard car or Stage 2 once parts are upgraded.
Tow car owners
Caravans and horseboxes feel lighter with more low-down pull, especially on long climbs.
When a remap may not be worth it
- Small non-turbo petrol engines, where gains are modest for the price
- Cars still under a manufacturer warranty you want to keep fully intact
- Lease or finance cars where the agreement bans modifications
- Engines with existing faults that haven't been fixed
- Owners whose insurer would add a large loading to the premium
Remap or leave it standard?
| Stage 1 remap | Economy remap | Leave it standard | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Power and torque | Noticeably more | A modest gain, mostly low down | As the factory set it |
| Fuel use | Similar, or slightly better on diesels | Aimed at better mpg | Unchanged |
| Insurance | Must be declared | Must be declared | No change |
| Manufacturer warranty | Claims on related parts may be refused | Claims on related parts may be refused | Unaffected |
| Cost with SGR | £275 + VAT | £275 + VAT | Nothing |
Weighing up the cost
At SGR, a Stage 1, Stage 2, economy or van remap is £275 + VAT, carried out at your home or workplace. Our guide to how much a remap costs covers what else to budget for.
Before you book, read how a remap affects insurance and warranty. If there are warning lights on, a diagnostic check first is money well spent.
Is remapping bad for the engine?
A well-written map on a healthy engine isn't. Problems usually come from aggressive maps or from faults that were there before the remap.
Does remapping shorten engine life?
Extra power adds some load, so wear parts like the clutch may need replacing sooner. A sensible map and regular servicing keep that in check.
Will a remap save me fuel?
On many diesels, yes, a little, especially with an economy map. How you use the extra power makes the biggest difference.
Can a remap be undone?
We save your original software before writing the new map, so the vehicle can be returned to standard later, for a separate charge.
