Remap cost guide: what you'll pay to remap a car or van

At SGR Automotive the remap cost for most cars and vans is £275 + VAT, whether you choose Stage 1, Stage 2, economy or a van map, and we do it at your home or workplace. A gearbox remap is £195 + VAT, or £440 + VAT alongside an engine remap. Below, we cover what changes the price from one tuner to the next and what to check before you pay.

What changes the cost of remapping a car

The type of remap

Some tuners charge more for Stage 2 than Stage 1 because the map is written around new hardware. Ours are the same price.

The ECU on your vehicle

Newer ECUs can be locked from the factory and need extra bench work before they'll accept a map. Ford's SID212 unit is a good example, covered in our SID212 tuning guide.

Gearbox mapping

Automatic and DSG gearboxes have their own control unit. Mapping it as well adds to the bill but lets the gearbox handle the extra torque.

Mobile or rolling road

A dyno session adds hire time for the rolling road, which tends to push the price up. Our dyno remapping page explains the difference.

Parts for Stage 2

The map is one cost and the upgraded parts are another. Budget for both if you're planning a Stage 2 car.

What the £275 + VAT covers with SGR

  • A technician coming to your home, workplace or yard
  • A fault code scan before any mapping starts
  • Your original ECU software read and saved
  • The new map written for your engine and the job you want it to do
  • A final code check and a run-through of what's changed

Diesel remap cost and petrol remap cost

At SGR, a diesel remap costs the same as a turbo petrol remap. Diesels often see the bigger torque gain, which is why they're popular with van owners and people who tow.

Small non-turbo petrol engines are the exception. The gains are modest, so we'll tell you if we think a remap isn't worth your money.

Costs to think about besides the remap

  • Insurance. A remap must be declared, and some insurers raise the premium. Our guide on how a remap affects insurance and warranty explains more.
  • Existing faults. A boost leak or sticking valve should be fixed before mapping. A diagnostic check is £100 + VAT if you're unsure.
  • Wear parts. Extra torque can show up a clutch or dual-mass flywheel that was already near the end of its life.
  • Return to standard. Ask whether the original file is saved and if there's a charge to put it back.

EGR delete and remap cost

Some owners ask for an EGR or DPF delete at the same time as a remap. Both deletes are £220 + VAT with us and are written into the ECU software.

If your EGR or DPF is causing trouble, a DPF clean or a diagnostic check is often the place to start.

How much is a remap for a diesel car?

With SGR, £275 + VAT for a Stage 1, Stage 2 or economy map. Add a gearbox map and the package is £440 + VAT.

Does a van remap cost more than a car remap?

No, a Stage 1 van remap is also £275 + VAT, whether it's a Transit, Sprinter, Vivaro or Transporter.

Is a cheap remap worth it?

Price alone tells you little. Ask whether the map is written for your engine, whether the original file is kept and whether codes are checked before and after.

How long does a remap take?

Most remaps take 60 to 90 minutes from start to finish. An engine and gearbox package can take a little longer.

Is the remap price the same everywhere in the North West?

Yes. Our prices are the same whether we're coming to you in Manchester, Preston, Chester or Huddersfield. The call-out is included in every price.

Can I have an EGR or DPF delete with my remap and keep using the car on the road?

No. We carry out deletes for off-road and export use only. Our guides on EGR delete legality and DPF removal explain the law.
