P0403 fault code meaning and fix
P0403 means the engine computer has lost proper electrical control of the EGR valve. It's usually the valve's motor, its wiring or the plug at the valve, and we can test the circuit at your home or workplace.
The short answer
The official description is EGR control circuit malfunction. The ECU sends a signal to open and close the exhaust gas recirculation valve, and P0403 sets when the current or voltage in that control circuit isn't what it should be.
Most vehicles keep going with P0403, though some cut power to protect the engine. If the valve has stuck open you may get rough idling or stalling, and that's a sign to stop and get it checked.
Symptoms that go with P0403
- The engine management light with no obvious change in how the car feels
- Rough or hunting idle if the valve is stuck partly open
- Stalling as you come to a stop
- Reduced power or limp mode on some makes
- A drop in fuel economy over a few weeks
What causes P0403
| Cause | What you might notice | How it's confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Failed motor or solenoid inside the EGR valve | Constant fault, valve doesn't respond to commands | Actuation test while watching valve position |
| Damaged or chafed wiring to the valve | Fault that comes and goes, especially on rough roads | Circuit tests with the loom moved |
| Corroded or loose connector at the valve | Intermittent fault, sometimes after wet weather | Connector inspection and resistance check |
| Blown fuse or supply fault | Valve completely dead | Supply voltage check |
Reading P0403 properly
P0403 is generic and means the same control circuit fault on any make. VW Group scanners often describe it as "EGR valve N18 malfunction", because N18 is the reference they use for the EGR valve, so the two descriptions point to the same part.
It's an electrical code, which sets it apart from flow codes like P0401. If the circuit reads high or low, many vehicles store P0489 or P0490 as well, which helps show where the break or short is.
How P0403 gets fixed
- Read the codes and freeze-frame data to see when the fault set and whether related circuit codes are stored.
- Test the circuit. Supply, earth and signal wiring are checked, then the valve is commanded open and closed to see if it responds.
- Repair the fault. A wiring or connector repair, or a new valve fitted by a garage.
- Clear and recheck with the valve tested again on live data.
What we can do about P0403
Mobile diagnostics, £100 + VAT
We test the EGR control circuit and the valve's response where the vehicle is parked, then tell you whether it's wiring, a connector or the valve itself.
New EGR valve
If the valve has failed, a garage replaces it. Our EGR valve replacement cost guide shows what to expect.
EGR delete, £220 + VAT
A software delete stops the ECU controlling and monitoring the valve.
What does P0403 mean in plain English?
The computer can't control the EGR valve properly because something in its electrical circuit is wrong, whether that's the valve's motor, the wiring or a plug.
Is P0403 a serious fault?
Usually not straight away. A valve stuck open can cause stalling and black smoke, though, and the lit warning light fails an MOT.
Can I clear P0403 with a cheap code reader?
The light will go out until the ECU next tests the circuit, which is often within minutes of starting. The code returns while the fault is there.
Does P0403 mean the same thing on every make?
Yes, though the wording varies. VW scanners call it N18 malfunction, and a Fiat Ducato 2.3 or any other diesel showing P0403 has the same circuit fault to trace.
How much does it cost to find the cause of P0403?
A mobile diagnostic is £100 + VAT. Electrical faults are often a wiring or plug repair, so testing first can save the cost of a valve.
Can an EGR delete be used on a road vehicle?
No. Our EGR deletes are carried out for off-road and export use only, and Is EGR delete legal? explains why.
