P2458 fault code meaning and fix
P2458 means the DPF has been regenerating for longer than the engine computer allows without finishing the job. It's usually heavy soot, journeys too short to complete a regeneration or a temperature sensor fault, and we can check and clean the filter where the vehicle is parked.
The short answer
The official description is DPF regeneration duration. During a regeneration the exhaust is heated to burn off soot, and the ECU sets a time limit for it. P2458 is stored when that limit runs out before the soot load has dropped far enough.
You can usually keep using the vehicle short term, but each failed regeneration leaves soot behind and adds a little diesel to the oil. Get it seen before it turns into a blocked filter and limp mode.
Symptoms that go with P2458
- The cooling fan running on and a raised idle, again and again
- A hot, burning smell after short trips
- The DPF light staying on even after a longer run
- The oil level creeping up on the dipstick
- Power dropping off as soot builds
What causes P2458
| Cause | What you might notice | How it's confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Journeys too short for a regeneration to finish | Fan running on after you park up | Regeneration history on live data |
| Heavy soot load that takes too long to burn | DPF light on, sluggish pick-up | Soot load and pressure readings |
| Faulty exhaust temperature sensor | Regenerations that stop and start | Temperature readings compared, codes such as P0544 |
| Engine making extra soot | Black smoke, EGR or injector faults | Related codes and live engine data |
Reading P2458 properly
P2458 is a generic code and describes the same timing check on any diesel with a DPF. It tells you the regeneration ran out of time, not why, so soot load, exhaust temperatures and regeneration history all need reading together.
If the code sits alongside P2459, regenerations are both too long and too frequent, which nearly always means the filter is overloaded or the temperature side isn't working.
How P2458 gets fixed
- Read soot, pressure and temperature data along with the regeneration history.
- Check the temperature sensors so a faulty reading isn't stopping regenerations early.
- Clean and regenerate. If it's soot, a cleaning solution goes in and a forced regeneration runs to completion with the filter still fitted.
- Clear and recheck the codes and the pressure across the filter.
What we can do about P2458
We also offer a DPF delete for £220 + VAT.
DPF cleaning, £275 + VAT
We take readings first, then clean the filter and run a full forced regeneration on site. If the readings show the filter is beyond cleaning, we'll say so before starting.
Mobile diagnostics, £100 + VAT
Where a temperature sensor or engine fault is stopping regenerations finishing, a diagnostic pins it down for your garage.
What does P2458 mean in plain English?
The DPF tried to clean itself, ran out of time and gave up, so soot is still sitting in the filter.
Is P2458 a serious fault?
It becomes one if it keeps happening. Repeated failed regenerations lead to a blocked filter and diesel in the oil, both of which cost more to fix than a clean.
Can I clear P2458 with a cheap code reader?
Clearing it won't burn off any soot, and the next regeneration is likely to fail in the same way. A forced regeneration needs proper diagnostic software.
Does P2458 mean the same thing on every make?
Yes. The time limits vary between manufacturers, but the code always means a regeneration took too long.
How much does it cost to find the cause of P2458?
Readings come as part of the £275 + VAT DPF clean. If something other than soot is the problem, a diagnostic is £100 + VAT.
Is a DPF delete an option if P2458 keeps coming back?
Only on a vehicle kept off-road or going for export, as a delete isn't for road use. Read Is DPF removal legal? before deciding.
