P2459 fault code meaning and fix
P2459 means the diesel particulate filter is regenerating more often than the engine computer allows. Heavy soot, a misreading pressure sensor or an engine making too much smoke is usually behind it, and we can take readings and clean the filter where the vehicle is parked.
The short answer
The official description is DPF regeneration frequency. The ECU keeps count of how often it has to burn soot out of the filter, and P2459 sets when regenerations come round too quickly.
Short-term use is usually fine, but frequent regenerations use extra fuel and can thin the engine oil with diesel. Book it in before the oil level climbs or the filter blocks.
Symptoms that go with P2459
- The fan running on after almost every trip
- Fuel use noticeably higher than usual
- A raised idle and a hot smell more often than before
- The oil level rising on the dipstick
What causes P2459
| Cause | What you might notice | How it's confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Soot or ash already loading the filter | Regens closer and closer together | Soot load, ash estimate and pressure |
| DPF pressure sensor or pipes misreading | Regens even on a clean filter | Sensor figures checked against the filter |
| Engine producing extra soot | Black smoke, EGR or injector codes | Related codes and live engine data |
| Regenerations cut short, then restarted | Fan running on after short trips | Regeneration history |
Reading P2459 properly
P2459 is generic and tells you how often regenerations happen, not why. The soot figure, the pressure reading and the regeneration history together show whether the filter is genuinely filling fast or the ECU is being fed a wrong number.
When P2458 is also stored, regenerations are both frequent and slow to finish, which points strongly to an overloaded filter.
How P2459 gets fixed
- Read soot, pressure and regeneration history to see what's triggering them.
- Rule out a sensor fault that makes a clean filter look full.
- Clean and regenerate if soot is the cause, with the filter left in place.
- Clear and recheck the readings, then deal with any engine fault making the extra soot.
What we can do about P2459
DPF cleaning, £275 + VAT
Readings first, then a cleaning solution and a forced regeneration on site, with codes cleared afterwards. If the filter is past cleaning, we tell you before we start.
Mobile diagnostics, £100 + VAT
If a sensor or an engine fault is behind the extra regenerations, a diagnostic finds it.
What does P2459 mean in plain English?
The DPF keeps needing to clean itself much more often than it should, which usually means it's filling too fast or the ECU thinks it is.
Is P2459 a serious fault?
It can become one. Constant regenerations dilute the oil and waste fuel, and the cause often leads to a blocked filter.
Can I clear P2459 with a cheap code reader?
It'll clear, but the regenerations carry on at the same rate and the code returns.
How much does it cost to find the cause of P2459?
Readings are included with the £275 + VAT DPF clean, and a diagnostic is £100 + VAT if the cause is elsewhere. A delete (£220 + VAT) is for off-road and export use only, see Is DPF removal legal?
