BMW 5 Series EGR problems and delete

A 520d or 530d with a rough idle, smoke or limp mode may have a sticking EGR valve. A visit to your home or work, with the codes and live data read on the spot, will confirm it. The EGR delete is £220 + VAT.

EGR symptoms on a 5 Series

  • Lumpy idle, particularly after a cold start
  • A hesitant response as you move off
  • Black smoke when you put your foot down
  • Limp mode and an engine management light
  • Falling coolant or white smoke, which can mean the EGR cooler is at fault

What causes EGR problems on a 5 Series

The valve feeds exhaust gas back into the intake, and that gas brings soot with it. Mixed with oil vapour from the crankcase breather, it builds into a hard deposit that eventually stops the valve moving freely.

BMW's N47 diesel, found in many BMW and MINI models, is a common EGR delete candidate. Whether your car is an E60 or an F10, the registration tells us which engine it has.

Fault codes you might see on a 5 Series

CodeWhat it points to
P0401Less EGR flow than the ECU expects
P0403A fault in the valve's control circuit
P042EThe valve stuck open

Wiring and sensors can trigger the same codes, so live data is checked before any part is blamed.

What we do about it

We begin with diagnostics for £100 + VAT to find the faulty part. We don't clean EGR valves, so the repair route is a new valve or cooler fitted by a garage.

The other option is the delete for £220 + VAT, switching the EGR off in the ECU and clearing the codes.

What are the signs of EGR trouble on a 5 Series?

A rough idle, hesitation, black smoke and limp mode. The engine management light often comes on too, sometimes before you notice a change in how the car feels.

Which fault codes point to the 5 Series EGR?

P0401, P0403 and P042E are three to look out for, and P0400 is another. Live data confirms whether the valve itself is the problem.

Can a sticking EGR cause limp mode on a 5 Series?

Yes. If EGR flow can't be controlled, the ECU may cut power to protect the engine until the fault is sorted.

Is it the 5 Series EGR valve or the cooler?

Coolant loss and white smoke point to the cooler, while rough running and black smoke point to the valve. Diagnostics separate the two, and our EGR cooler guide covers the cooler.

Is an EGR delete legal on a 520d or 530d?

Not on a 5 Series used on UK roads. We carry out the delete for off-road and export cars only, as our EGR delete legality guide explains.

Sort the EGR problem on your 5 Series

Tell us the registration and what the car is doing, and we'll find a time to come out. More BMWs are on our BMW EGR page, and the same car can be booked for 5 Series DPF cleaning or 5 Series remapping.
