P204F reductant system performance (bank 1)

P204F returns after clearing because the AdBlue system is retested on almost every journey, and whatever is stopping it working is still in place. We read the system at your home, yard or depot and find the part that's letting it down.

Why P204F comes back after clearing

The official wording is Reductant system performance (bank 1). It's a broad code meaning the AdBlue system as a whole isn't doing what the ECU expects, whether that's dosing, pressure or the result measured by the NOx sensors.

A reset doesn't change any of that. The next time the ECU runs its checks, the same shortfall appears and P204F is stored again, often with the no-restart countdown picking up where it left off.

The usual causes behind P204F

CauseHow it's checked
Poor-quality or diluted AdBlueQuality reading on live data, often with P207F stored
Crystallised or blocked dosing injectorDosing test and a look at the injector
Weak AdBlue pump or blocked pump filterPressure readings during dosing
Leaking line or connectionVisual check for white crust and pressure drop
Faulty NOx sensor misjudging the resultUpstream and downstream readings compared

Symptoms

  • An AdBlue warning and engine light that return after every reset
  • A no-restart countdown on the dash
  • White deposits around the exhaust or AdBlue injector
  • AdBlue use that doesn't match what you'd normally expect

Using the vehicle with P204F showing

The vehicle normally runs as usual, but on Euro 6 models the countdown carries on while the fault is there. Once it reaches zero, the engine won't restart after switching off, so plan the fix while there's still plenty on the counter.

Vans and fleets with P204F

AdBlue faults hit vans hard because a no-restart can strand a vehicle mid-shift. We read the AdBlue system on vans at your yard or depot, so you know which need dealer work and which just need fresh fluid.

How we stop P204F coming back

AdBlue system diagnosis, £100 + VAT

We read the codes, fluid quality, pressure and NOx readings, then test dosing. AdBlue repairs aren't something we do, and our written findings tell a dealer or SCR specialist exactly where to start.

AdBlue delete, £330 + VAT

This software delete takes AdBlue control and its monitoring out of the ECU.

Frequently asked questions

SGR Automotive van parked beside a customer's car
Why does P204F come back after it's been cleared?

The AdBlue system is checked again on the next journey, and if dosing, pressure or the NOx result still falls short, the code is logged again.

Can a remap cause P204F?

A remap that ignores the emissions side can push NOx up beyond what the AdBlue system can deal with. A properly set-up remap keeps within safe limits and leaves the AdBlue system to run as designed.

Can another fault set off P204F?

Yes. A faulty NOx sensor or an EGR fault raising NOx can make the AdBlue system look like it's failing. Related codes such as P20E8 help point the right way.

What does P207F mean?

P207F is the code for Reductant quality performance. The ECU has decided the AdBlue in the tank isn't the right strength, usually because it's old, diluted or contaminated, and it often appears with P204F. Draining and refilling with fresh fluid is the usual starting point.

Can you check P204F on our vans at the depot?

Yes. Tell us how many vans are affected and roughly where their countdowns are, and we'll prioritise the lowest.

What should I tell you when I book for P204F?

The registration, the full code, any countdown figure and where the last AdBlue top-up came from.

Who can have an AdBlue delete for P204F?

Only vehicles used off-road or for export. Road vehicles have to keep a working AdBlue system, as Is AdBlue delete legal? explains.

Stop P204F coming back

Book a fault check and we'll find what's holding the AdBlue system back, wherever the vehicle is parked.
