AdBlue warning light meaning and what to do next

An AdBlue warning light means the system that cuts NOx from your diesel exhaust needs attention, either because the tank is running low or because the engine computer has logged a fault. A top-up clears a reminder about a low tank. If the light stays on, flashes or comes with a mileage countdown, something in the system has failed.

What the AdBlue symbol looks like

Most makes show a droplet-shaped symbol, often with a filler nozzle or exhaust outline beside it, in amber or blue. Others skip the symbol and put a text message on the dash, such as "Top up AdBlue" or "Check AdBlue system".

On many vehicles an amber or blue light is a reminder, while a red light or a message about restarting means the countdown has begun. Peugeot, Citroen and Vauxhall models may show an emission system fault message in its place.

Why the AdBlue light comes on

Low AdBlue level

The most common reason. The first reminder usually appears with plenty of range left, and the light goes out once the tank is filled.

Poor or diluted fluid

Water, old fluid or anything other than AdBlue in the tank changes the urea mix, and the quality sensor flags it with codes like P207F.

Pump losing pressure

When the pump can't hold pressure, dosing stops and P20E8 is stored. Our AdBlue pump failure guide covers the signs.

Heater or level sensor fault

A failed heater or a sensor that misreads the level brings the light on even with a full tank. Our guide to AdBlue heater and tank faults explains more.

NOx sensor readings

If a NOx sensor fails or reads out of range, the ECU assumes the system isn't cleaning the exhaust. Read about NOx sensor faults.

Topped up AdBlue but the light is still on

Many vehicles need a few minutes with the ignition on, or a short run, before the level sensor registers fresh fluid. Some won't accept a small top-up from a bottle at all, so check the handbook for the minimum amount your vehicle needs.

If the light is still there after that, or it came on with the tank already full, the warning is coming from a fault. Topping up again won't change it, and the next step is reading the codes.

What to do when the light comes on

Read the message

Note whether it mentions topping up, a system fault or a mileage figure.

Top up with proper AdBlue

Use fluid marked ISO 22241 from a sealed container or a pump, and never top up with water.

Give it time to register

Leave the ignition on for a few minutes or take a short run, then check again.

Write down any countdown

The figure tells you how long you have before the engine won't restart.

If the light stays, a scan shows which part of the system has failed.

Where SGR can help

Our mobile diagnostic check (£100 + VAT) reads the AdBlue codes and live data where the vehicle is parked, so you know which part has failed before paying for anything. SGR don't replace AdBlue parts, so you'd take that diagnosis to a dealer or SCR specialist.

Our AdBlue delete (£330 + VAT) is the other option, switching the system off in the ECU.

Frequently asked questions about the AdBlue warning light

SGR Automotive van parked outside a customer's house
Can I keep using my car with the AdBlue light on?

Yes, while there's no countdown. Once a mileage figure appears, plan to sort it, because the engine won't restart after it reaches zero.

Why is my AdBlue light flashing?

On many vehicles a flashing light means a fault has been stored, even with fluid in the tank. Topping up won't clear it, so have the codes read.

Why is the AdBlue light on when the tank is full?

The level sensor, heater or another part of the system has usually failed. The ECU can't confirm the system is working, so it keeps the warning on.

Will an AdBlue fault damage my engine?

The AdBlue system treats the exhaust after combustion, so a fault won't harm the engine itself. Leaving it does lead to a no-restart countdown on Euro 6 vehicles.

Is deleting AdBlue a legal fix for the warning light?

Only on a vehicle used off-road or going for export, as it's illegal on one used on UK roads. Read is AdBlue delete legal? before you decide.
