How to fix a P244B fault code

P244B is usually a filter full of soot, but a blocked sensor pipe or ash can set it too, and those need different fixes. Readings at your home or workplace show which, with diagnostics at £100 + VAT and DPF cleaning at £275 + VAT.

What P244B means

The official wording is DPF differential pressure too high (bank 1). The pressure difference between the inlet and outlet of the filter is higher than it should be, meaning exhaust is struggling to get through.

What causes P244B

  • Soot building up from short trips or unfinished regenerations
  • Ash on an older, high-mileage filter
  • A blocked or kinked pressure sensor pipe
  • A faulty pressure sensor reading high
  • An engine making extra soot from an EGR, injector or boost fault

Symptoms you may notice

A DPF light, sluggish pick-up and regenerations that come round more often are the usual signs. As the restriction grows, many vehicles drop into limp mode to protect the turbo and filter.

Using the vehicle with P244B

Short, gentle journeys are usually fine for a few days, but high back pressure strains the turbo and the soot load only goes one way. Get readings taken before limp mode or P246C arrives.

What happens on a P244B visit

  • Readings first. We take soot, ash and pressure readings before any work, as part of the £275 + VAT clean.
  • Clean if it's soot. A cleaning solution and a forced regeneration clear the filter with it still fitted.
  • If it isn't soot, a diagnostic (£100 + VAT) finds the sensor, pipe or ash problem and you're told before any money is spent on cleaning.
  • Clear and recheck the codes and pressure across the filter.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to fix P244B?

Most cases are soot, and a DPF clean is £275 + VAT. A sensor or pipe repair is a garage quote, and a new filter is often over £1,000 fitted.

Is it worth fixing P244B on an older or high-mileage vehicle?

A clean usually is. If ash means a new filter, weigh that quote against the vehicle's value.

Will a new pressure sensor always clear P244B?

No. If the filter really is blocked, a new sensor reports the same high pressure.

Can you sort P244B at my home or workplace?

Yes, if it's soot. The readings and the clean both happen where the vehicle is parked.

Do I need a diagnostic before you can quote for P244B?

Not usually, as readings come with the clean. A diagnostic is only needed if they point away from soot.

Is a DPF delete an option for P244B?

Only on a vehicle used off-road or going for export, as that's the only use we carry deletes out for. Is DPF removal legal? has the detail.
