VW Transporter EGR problems and delete

An EGR delete on a Transporter costs £220 + VAT at your yard or home, against a new valve plus fitting at a garage. We'll talk through which suits your T5 or T6 before you book.

A diagnostic check for £100 + VAT confirms the valve is really at fault before you choose either. We don't clean EGR valves.

What an EGR delete changes on the Transporter

The delete switches the exhaust gas recirculation system off in the ECU, so the valve stays shut and its fault codes are cleared. With no soot-laden gas going back into the intake, the rough running and hesitation that a sticking valve causes should stop.

The work is done through the diagnostic port where the van is parked, and most deletes take 60 to 90 minutes.

Is it worth it on a Transporter?

On a T5 or T6, a delete avoids paying for a valve that may clog up again. Vans that idle on site and stop and start all day are hard on EGR valves, so a replacement can be a repeat cost.

If you'd rather keep the EGR working, a new valve fitted by a garage is the fix, and our diagnostic check makes sure it's the right part first.

Frequently asked questions

EGR delete or a new valve for my Transporter?

A new valve from a garage keeps the EGR system working as designed, while the £220 + VAT delete stops the EGR causing trouble again without buying a replacement valve.

Is a Transporter EGR delete legal?

Only on a van used off-road or going for export, not on UK public roads. We'll ask how the Transporter is used before booking a delete, and our guide on whether an EGR delete is legal explains where the line sits.

Can the EGR and DPF be deleted together?

Yes, we can carry out both on the same visit. The DPF delete is £220 + VAT on top of the EGR delete, and our Transporter DPF page covers DPF cleaning too.

Will a new valve clog again?

It can, because the same soot and oil vapour that blocked the old one keep passing through it. If your T5 valve is also leaking, that's worth mentioning when you book, as it affects which option suits.
