VW Crafter DPF problems and cleaning

A DPF light or exhaust filter warning on a Crafter means the filter is filling with soot faster than the van can burn it off. We read the codes at your yard or depot and clean the filter on site for £275 + VAT.

DPF warning signs on a Crafter

  • The DPF light or an exhaust filter warning light on the dash
  • A loaded van struggling on hills it normally manages easily
  • Limp mode, often after a week of short drops
  • A high idle or fans running on after switch-off
  • More fuel used per shift than usual

What fills a Crafter's DPF

Vans that idle on site and stop and start all day are hard on DPFs. A Crafter on multi-drop work may never run hot for long enough to finish a regeneration, so the soot keeps building.

Faults upstream can speed that up. A sticking EGR valve, a leaking injector or a pressure sensor giving false readings will either add soot or stop regenerations happening when they should.

Fault codes you might see on a Crafter

CodeWhat it points to
P2002The filter isn't performing as the ECU expects
P2463Soot accumulation in the filter
P246CA restriction that has triggered reduced power

Live soot and pressure readings back up the codes, so a dodgy sensor doesn't get mistaken for a blocked filter.

What we do about it

We start with a diagnostic check for £100 + VAT at the yard, depot or your home. If it's soot, we clean the Crafter's filter in place for £275 + VAT using a cleaning solution and a forced regeneration.

A DPF delete costs £220 + VAT. Fleets can also open a trade account.

Why does my Crafter's DPF keep blocking?

Short stop-start routes don't give the filter time to regenerate. If it blocks again soon after a clean, an EGR, injector or sensor fault is often feeding it.

What does the DPF warning mean on a Crafter?

The ECU has measured a soot load it isn't happy with. Act on it while the light is steady, before the van goes into limp mode mid-round.

Can I keep using my Crafter with the DPF light on?

You can finish the day if it's running normally, but more short stops will make it worse. If it's in limp mode, park it up and book a check.

Will a forced regeneration clear the Crafter's filter?

It can if the filter isn't too full. Once the soot has compacted, a regeneration alone may fail, so our clean softens it with a solution first.

Can a Crafter with a DPF delete go back on the road?

No. We carry out the Crafter delete for off-road and export vans only, as set out in our DPF removal guide.

Send the registration and what the dash is showing, and we'll book a visit to your yard, depot or home. More VW models are on our VW DPF page, and the same van can be booked for Crafter remapping or an AdBlue check.
