Ford Transit EGR problems and delete
Rough idling, black smoke or limp mode on a Transit often trace back to the EGR valve or its cooler. We read the codes and live data at your yard or home and tell you what's failed. The EGR delete is £220 + VAT.
EGR warning signs on a Transit
- A lumpy or uneven idle, especially from cold
- Hesitation or a flat spot when pulling away with a load on
- Black smoke when you accelerate
- Limp mode, with the engine management light on
- Coolant going down with no obvious leak, or white smoke, which can point to the EGR cooler
- A rattle or tapping from the valve area, if the valve is sticking
What causes EGR problems on a Transit
The EGR valve sends some exhaust back into the intake, and that gas carries soot. Mixed with oil vapour from the engine breather, it bakes onto the valve until it sticks open or shut. Vans that idle on site and stop and start all day are hard on EGR valves, because they produce lots of soot at low temperatures.
The EGR cooler is a separate part that cools that gas with engine coolant. If your Transit is losing coolant or showing white smoke, our EGR cooler failure guide covers what to look for.
Fault codes you might see on a Transit
| Code | What it points to |
|---|---|
| P0401 | Not enough EGR flow, often a clogged valve or passage |
| P0400 | A general EGR flow fault the ECU can't pin down further |
| P042E | The valve stuck open, letting exhaust in when it shouldn't |
The same code can come from a wiring fault or a sensor, so we check the live data before blaming the valve.
Transits with the SID212 ECU
Many 2018-on Transit models use a locked Ford SID212 ECU, so the EGR delete for those is done off site. The ECU is shipped away for unlocking and back to you in 7 days, at £1,200 + VAT. Our SID212 EGR delete page covers those vans, and the SID212 unlocking guide explains the background.
What we do about it
We begin with a diagnostic check for £100 + VAT, so you know whether it's the valve, the cooler, a sensor or the wiring. We don't clean EGR valves, so a repair means a new valve or cooler fitted by a garage.
The EGR delete costs £220 + VAT. It switches the system off in the ECU and clears the stored codes.
What are the signs of EGR trouble on a Transit?
A rough idle, hesitation under load, black smoke and limp mode are the usual ones. On mk6 and mk7 Transits alike, the engine management light often comes on alongside them.
Which fault codes point to the EGR?
P0400, P0401 and P042E are three of the common ones, and P0403 points to the valve's control circuit. A code tells us where to look, and the live data confirms it.
Can a sticking EGR cause limp mode?
Yes. If the ECU can't control how much exhaust gas goes back into the engine, it often cuts power to protect it until the fault is cleared.
Is it the Transit's EGR valve or the cooler?
The symptoms overlap, but coolant loss and white smoke point more towards the cooler. A diagnostic check separates the two before you pay for parts, whether your Transit is a 2.2 TDCi or has another engine.
Can a Transit used for road work have the EGR delete?
No. We carry out Transit EGR deletes for off-road and export vans only, and our guide on whether an EGR delete is legal sets out the rules.
Sort the EGR problem on your Transit
Send the registration and describe what the van is doing, and we'll come to your yard, depot or home. Other Ford models are on our Ford EGR page, including the Ranger.
The same van can also be booked for Transit DPF cleaning, Transit remapping or an AdBlue check.
