Ford Ranger DPF cleaning and delete

An "exhaust filter overloaded" message or a DPF light on a Ranger means the filter is struggling to clear its soot. We clean it on site for £275 + VAT, and the DPF delete is £220 + VAT.

DPF warning signs on a Ranger

  • "Exhaust filter overloaded" on the dash display
  • A DPF warning light that won't clear after a long run
  • The Ranger feeling weak when loaded or towing
  • Limp mode, with the revs held back
  • The idle sitting high, or the fan running on, after you switch off

Why DPFs block on a Ranger

Pickups that idle on site and stop and start all day are hard on DPFs. The filter needs a good spell at high exhaust temperature to burn its soot off, and a working day of short moves around a yard rarely provides one.

Other faults make it worse. A sticking EGR valve, a leaking injector or a pressure sensor giving false readings can all fill the filter or stop regenerations from running.

Fault codes you might see on a Ranger

CodeWhat it points to
P2463A heavy soot load in the filter
P2002Filter performance below the expected level
P242FAsh restriction, which a clean won't remove

Codes are the starting point, and the live readings confirm what's really going on.

Rangers with the SID212 ECU

A locked Ford SID212 ECU is used on many 2018-on Ranger models. That ECU has to come out and go away to be unlocked, with the pickup's ECU refitted in 7 days for £1,200 + VAT. It's covered in more depth on our SID212 DPF delete page and in the SID212 unlocking and tuning guide.

What we do about it

We start with a diagnostic check for £100 + VAT at your yard, site or home. In most cases, the fix is a DPF clean for £275 + VAT, with the filter left in place while the cleaning solution and a forced regeneration do the work.

The DPF delete is £220 + VAT and switches the filter's monitoring and regeneration off in the ECU.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Ranger's DPF keep blocking?

Mostly because work-day use doesn't let regenerations finish. If a filter blocks again quickly after a clean, there's often an EGR or injector fault feeding it extra soot.

What does the DPF warning mean on a Ranger?

It means the ECU reckons the filter is too full of soot. "Exhaust filter overloaded" is the same warning in words, and both need dealing with before limp mode sets in.

Can I keep using my Ranger with the DPF light on?

Briefly, but towing or short yard trips will load the filter further. Book a check quickly, and if the Ranger is in limp mode, park it up until we've seen it.

Will a forced regeneration clear the Ranger's filter?

It might if the soot load is modest. Once the soot has packed in, a regeneration often stops before it's done, which is why our clean softens it first.

Can a Ranger with a DPF delete still be driven on the road?

No. We carry out Ranger DPF deletes for pickups used off-road or going for export only, and our DPF removal guide explains the rules.

Sort the DPF problem on your Ranger

Send the registration and the message on the dash, and we'll come to your yard, site or home. Our Ford DPF page covers the rest of the range, including the Transit and Transit Custom.
